PAGE SIXTEEN
Panel One: Big splash page of Sama falling away from us, into the darkness. He is looking straight out at the readers, reaching forward trying to hold on to something, anything. But the ground has just disappeared.
If I were being corny, I would suggest the background be a large spiral pattern, the way space/time portals used to be in Saturday morning cartoons. However, I am not being corny.
So how can we update that visual effect? We could do speed lines all converging in the center of the page. I would take it a step further. What if the speed lines were stretching, cutting, and distorting Sama's body. Not physically, just the drawing. As if the pen lines themselves are all f***ed up. Maybe we hint at a similar effect that we used with the old man in the hospital (though it shouldn't be the SAME effect). This journey to Undertown, this transfer, it must look magical. It also must look, not painful, but DIFFICULT.
And because I'd like to have the next page (17) in which Sama is falling vertically down the page, here I want to emphasis the falling away from us more.
This is why I love comics. No words can do justice to the image Jake drew on this page. Here you can read why I had asked Jake to draw, but really what I wanted was exactly what he did draw.
