In cons that are based in hotels, there are usually water stations scattered around. Those are there for *you* the con-goer. TOKYOPOP Manga Revolution Water Bottle

It seems like most people “get” the idea that if an attractive person is wearing a skimpy cosplay, that this person is not “asking for” negative attention, particularly from the opposite sex. However, there is a very small minority who are ruining it for everyone else, and I am getting to the point where I have to call it out in no uncertain terms.

Let me put it succintly, something people have noticed I have difficulty doing. Someone came up with a soundbite that works, so I’m borrowing it.

COSPLAY IS NOT CONSENT.

Let me break it down for you. Anime fandom is unique in the entire fan universe in that we have rough gender parity among fans. There are about 50% male and 50% female fans at a given con. Anime and Manga have always been designed to appeal to female fans as well as male fans, although not necessarily the same stories for both genders. This holds true not only in Japan, but in otakudom in other parts of the world, including here in the States.

This means that there are a lot of women and girls walking around along with the traditional fanboy types that populate other fandom events. Some of them might be in costume. Some of them might be even wearing outfits that qualify as “fanservice.” HOWEVER…it does NOT entitle you to creep around, make rude comments, take pictures without permission, and/or proposition those who are in cosplay, even rather brief and/or sexy cosplay.

To be fair, the most recent incidents that have garnered a lot of comment were incidents that involved people who are sort of on the edge of being journalists. People who do web media and web video. I do this myself, and for years I was a part of the Otaku no Podcast. Arguably this intermittent column here on the TOKYOPOP website falls under the rubric of journalism. I actually went to school for this sort of thing. There is a sort of gamer/frat-boy edge to the media the culprits produce. Call the mainstream media the “lamestream media” all you like, but people who do this professionally rather than as a hobby have a certain…well, PROFESSIONALISM that would preclude this kind of behavior.

In any event, treat the people who have the guts enough to get on a costume (whether homemade, commissioned from an artisan or store-bought matters not a whit) and go out in public at a con wearing it with respect. Ask permission to take pictures. Treat that person like a fellow human being who deserves respect, not as an object or a pair of boobs. If you would get mad if someone treated your sister or your girlfriend the way you might want to treat that person who’s cosplaying, DON’T DO IT.

In the words of King Of All Fanboys Wil Wheaton: DON’T BE A DICK. Thank you and goodnight.
