Manga is the Japanese word for "graphic novel." Traditionally rendered in black and white, it traverses a wide variety of genres, including romance, fantasy, and science fiction. The modern manga style was invented by Osamu Tezuka—the creator of such classic works as Astro Boy—in the late 1940s/early 1950s. But since then, the manga industry has exploded, first in Japan, and more recently in North America. Manga is now truly a worldwide phenomenon, with artists, writers, and most importantly, fans gobbling up manga wherever they can find it!
